How Do I Become a Habitat Home Owner?

We welcome your application if:

You are a legal resident of Canada and have lived in Sault Ste. Marie and Area for at least the past 2 years.

Any bankruptcy has been discharged for at least 2 years.

Your present housing does not meet your family's needs. It may be too small, too costly, unhealthy, unsafe in poor shape, etc.

You have a steady income but are unable to afford or obtain a conventional mortgage.

Your yearly total family income, before deductions, is approximately $19,000 but less than the following income limits:

You are managing your debt in a responsible way.

Adding a mortgage to your present debt would not put a strain on your financial health.

You are willing to work at least 500 hours of sweat equity on the construction of your own home and on other "Habitat" activities and projects.

You are willing to participate in Habitat's 'Family Support Program' which offers support and guidance in all aspects of home ownership including financial budgeting, home maintenance and home ownership.

You are able to provide reference names from 3 non-related people who know you well.

You will be asked to provide a current credit bureau report and a completed Police Record Search.
